Technical Tip: The 'Follow upgrade path' option is not working

Description This article describes why FortiGate directly upgrades to target firmware even if 'Follow Upgrade Path' is selected.
Scope FortiGate v7.0.7+, v7.2.0+, v7.4.0+.
Solution

The issue is related to known issues on v7.0.7+, v7.2.0+,v 7.4.0+. When upgrading the firmware with multiple hops/jumps of the FortiOS version in the GUI, the 'Follow Upgrade Path' option does not respect the recommended upgrade path. Instead, it directly upgrades to the target FortiOS version.

This issue is resolved on versions v7.0.16, v7.2.9, v7.4.4 and v7.6.0.

Workaround:

Users can follow the recommended upgrade path by selecting the exact interim GA version to upgrade to. For example, if upgrading from v7.0.7 to v7.0.15, upgrade path will be v7.0.7 -> v7.0.9 -> v7.0.11 -> v7.0.13 -> v7.0.14 -> v7.0.15.

Instead of selecting v7.0.15, the user can enable 'Show More', choose the first hop v7.0.9, and then upgrade.

Another workaround is to download the firmware images manually from the Fortinet support portal. For a guide on how to download the firmware, see How to manually download firmware of FortiGate and how to upload it on FortiGate.

Make sure that the recommended upgrade path is followed when upgrading manually, as outlined in the FortiGate Upgrade Tool Table.
