Technical Tip: Setting FortiGate port media type

| A short-range transceiver (SR) is designed to transmit data over a short distance (up to 300 m). A Long-Range transceiver (LR) is designed to transmit data over long distances (up to 10 km). Copper Transceiver (CR), unlike SR and LR, uses a copper cable, and the distance covered depends on the type (10-30m or 80-100m).
On FortiGate-3501F/2601F, for instance, the LR4 or SR4 media type will not be visible on the port configuration if the port speed is set as auto; only CR is available/visible. To see LR4, SR4, and CR4 media types, the port speed needs to be set to 100Gfull.
With Port36 speed set to auto:

Setting an incorrect media type may result in connectivity failure; for instance, the transceiver media type is 'LR', but the interface media type configuration is set to 'SR', the related links are mostly shown as 'down' or fail to transmit data.
Note: On devices like 3201F, once the speed is set to 1000full (1G), the media type lr and sr is no longer selectable or configurable. Only 'gmii' or 'sgmii' can be seen as a media type. |
