Technical Tip: Schedule firmware upgrade by GUI

Steps for v7.4.x:

• For v7.4.x, firmware upgrade under System -> Firmware & Registration -> Fabric upgrade.
• Check the screenshots below showing the upgrade procedure in v7.4.x.
• Go to Select-Firmware -> All Upgrades.

• Choose Schedule -> Custom -> Select Date and time.
• Select Confirm and Backup Config.

• Confirm Upgrade Status with the scheduled date.

Step for v7.6.x: It is also possible to schedule an upgrade at a specific time directly.

Note:

This can also be done via CLI.

Run the command below to initialize the fabric upgrade.

execute federated-upgrade initialize 

Preparing for federated upgrade...

After running the first command, it will ask for the date and time when the upgrade will be performed.

When should the upgrade run? [immediate | hh:mm YYYY/MM/DD] 01:00 2025/10/18  

After specifying the date and time, it will ask which firmware version the FortiGate needs to be upgraded to. In the example below, the version is 7.4.9.

(Use comma-separated versions with format M.m.p. For example, 1.2.3) 7.4.9
Include FortiGates in upgrade? (y/n)y    <----- Press Y to upgrade all FortiGates, which is the fabric.
