Technical Tip: Neighbor Reachability Timer uses default value for 10 minutes after reboot

Description

This article describes the temporary behaviour following a system reboot, where the system uses a default 30-second neighbor reachable timer for the first 10 minutes before applying the configured reachable-time setting.

Scope

FortiOS.

Solution

After a system reboot, there is an intentional 10-minute delay before newly configured neighbor reachability timer settings (for example, set reachable-time 3600000) become fully active in the kernel.

During the first 10 minutes after boot-up, the device uses the default reachable time value of 30 seconds. Once the initial 10-minute period has elapsed, the configured reachable-time value is applied and functions as expected.
