Solution
The following configuration can be used on the FortiGate to enable password-expiry-warning of remote LDAP user.

config user ldap

edit<name>

        set password-expiry-warning enable

    end

By using this configuration the remote LDAP user will receive a password expiry warning upon login to the FortiGate (VPN etc.)
