Technical Tip : How to boot alternative FortiGate firmware when running in HA mode

This article describes that when 2 FortiGates are in HA Cluster, the 'boot alternative firmware' option is not available via the GUI.

 

Scope

Solution

 

To be able to use the 'boot alternate firmware' option, it is necessary to break the HA Cluster (For example shut down the Secondary FortiGate). After the Secondary FortiGate has been shut down, the 'boot alternate firmware' option will show up on the Primary FortiGate.

 

After booting the Primary FortiGate using alternate firmware, you can power off the Primary FortiGate and power on each Secondary FortiGate in turn to use the “boot alternate firmware” option. After all the FortiGates are booted with Alternate firmware, they can then rejoin to cluster.
