Technical Tip : How to block Gmail instant messaging chat (Google Web Talk) - FortiOS 4.0 and 4.0 MR1

This article explains how to block Gmail web chat.
Scope

Solution
This procedure uses an application control feature that is only available for v4 firmware. It is not applicable to v3 firmware.
1. From the Web GUI, open UTM > Application control > Create New > Fill next details
Category : IM
Application : Google.web.talk
Action : Block
Tick Enable Logging
2. Select 'OK' to save
3. Apply this Application control in the relevant protection profile
4. Clear all existing sessions or wait until they timeout. Once there are no existing sessions that were opened before the policy modification then access to Gmail chat will be prevented for all clients.
The message "Your Internet connection is experiencing problems or your network administrator has blocked Gmail chat" should then be displayed to users in their browser.
