Technical Tip: Firmware upgrade path not visible in FortiGate Upgrade Path Tool

Description

This article describes why certain FortiOS firmware versions may not appear in the FortiGate Upgrade Path Tool.

Scope

FortiGate.

Solution

Certain firmware versions are intentionally removed from the upgrade path when newer firmware is being released. A common scenario is that the previous firmware version contains only critical vulnerability fixes (but not bug fixes), but the latter firmware release contains the remediation for the vulnerabilities and other bug fixes. This is to reduce the confusion and ensure the user's firmware patch is updated with the proper vulnerability fixes and bug fixes accordingly.

In such cases, the removed firmware version will no longer appear in the FortiGate Upgrade Path Tool, and an upgrade is recommended directly to the newer fixed version.

For example:

FortiOS v7.0.18, v7.2.12, v7.4.10, and v7.6.5 were removed from the upgrade path due to CVE-2026-24858.
