Technical Tip: False alarm message 'Factory Default'

| Description | This article describes the 'Factory Default' message during firmware upgrades on FortiGates and explains when it can be safely ignored. |
| Scope | FortiGate. |
| Solution | When the firmware is upgraded on the FortiGate, it is possible to receive the following message:
Configuration will return to "Factory Default".
As long as the firmware is upgraded, and not downgraded to an earlier version, the FortiGate will preserve the configuration file.
It is possible to disregard this message as long as the new image is a higher build number. It is recommended to back up the FortiGate configuration file before performing any firmware upgrades.
