Technical Tip: Downgrade/Upgrade via GUI from v7.2.0

Description This article describes that in v7.2.0 GUI option to downgrade/upgrade the FortiOS under System - > Firmware is no more available.
Scope FortiGate, Fabric Management.
Solution

From v7.0.2 a new feature of 'Fabric Management' is added into FortiOS from where the administrator can upgrade/downgrade the FortiOS for the Local FortiGate, and as well as if Security fabric is configured, from the root FortiGate one can upgrade/downgrade the FortiOS for downstream devices.

 

There are two ways to access the Fabric Management page from the GUI.

 

Option 1: From Firewall GUI go to System - > Fabric Management.


The devices are displayed in the table with their firmware version and status and available version to upgrade.

On v7.4 and v7.6, the option is changed to 'Firmware & Registration'.

To upgrade/downgrade:

  1. Select the device and select 'Upgrade'.

The FortiGate upgrade pane opens.

  1. Select Latest (other options available are All Upgrades, All Downgrades, and File Upload).

Select the option that is displayed.

 

  1. Select options: 'Follow upgrade path' or 'Directly upgrade to'. Review warning information to option 'Follow upgrade path':

Option 2: To access the Fabric Management page from GUI (This option is only available from FortiOS 7.2.0 onward) GUI - > Admin - > system - > Fabric Management.

There is an option to schedule the upgrade/downgrade on Fabric Management 

  1. To schedule the upgrade/downgrade on the firewall, go to  System -> Fabric Management -> Fabric Upgrade.

  1. Follow steps: 'Select Firmware', 'Choose Schedule', 'Review'.

  1. Review Warning Information message.

  1. Select Firmware options: 'Latest' or 'All Upgrades' or 'All Downgrades'.

  1. Select: 'Follow upgrade path' or 'Directly upgrade to'.

     6. Choose 'Custom', select the date and time, and select 'Next'.

  1. Review and select 'Confirm and Backup Config'.

  1. To cancel the scheduled upgrade/Downgrade,  go to System -> Fabric Management -> Cancel Fabric Upgrade.

Note.

Schedule upgrade/downgrade is only available on the Fabric Upgrade in Fabric Management.
