Technical Tip: Customizing email subject line for email-based MFA tokens on FortiGate

This article describes how to modify the subject line of the MFA email notification for Email-based MFA tokens on the FortiGate.

Solution

FortiGate does not natively support customization of the email subject line for MFA tokens. The subject line is predefined and cannot be altered through the FortiGate interface or CLI commands.

There is no built-in feature in FortiOS to directly modify the email subject line for MFA tokens on FortiGate.

Alternative approaches:

1. External Email Gateway: An external email gateway or relay server can intercept and modify the email subject line before delivering it to the end user. This would require additional configuration outside of FortiGate.

2. Custom Scripts: If there is a control over the SMTP server, custom scripts or rules can be implemented to modify the subject line of outgoing emails.

The alternative approaches mentioned above are specific to the SMTP server and require additional configuration outside of FortiGate; hence, they need to be checked with the Email Server team. This is completely out of FortiGate's scope of support.
