Technical Note : 3G USB modems and custom configure overwrite
Description
This article gives a technical tip on how to ensure a 3G USB modem is recognized by the FortiGate and when custom configuration should be configured.
Scope
FortiOS v4.0 MR2 and above.
Solution
In System >Network >Modem >Custom, a 3G USB Modem added as a Custom modem overrides any 3G USB modem included in the Supported List (System >Network >Modem >Supported).
It must be noted that FortiOS does not officially support the hot swapping of 3G USB modems, therefore changing a 3G USB Modem may require a system reboot to ensure that the modem is fully recognized by the FortiGate.
It is important to verify that the 3G USB modem is on the Supported List, and only create a Custom modem entry in the scenario when the modem is not on the list, otherwise the override will take precedent and may cause the 3G USB modem not to be recognized by the FortiGate.
