Description This article describes how to resolve an issue where the Edge 100G firmware upgrade reboots to the previous version instead of the updated one.
Scope FortiDeceptor DaaS, FortiDeceptor 100G.
Solution

Analysis:
During the FortiDeceptor-100G boot sequence, the BIOS menu offers the following option:

[B]: Boot with backup firmware and set as default.

If this option was selected, or if a stray character 'B' was sent via the serial line during boot, the unit will permanently load firmware from the backup partition. Since the upgrade process targets the Default partition, the system will continue to boot the old version even after a successful flash.

How to verify:

Monitor the boot process via the console. If the unit is using the backup partition, the following string will be seen:

Initializing Firmware...
Initializing system files (backup) ................................... [ OK ]

How to resolve:

  1. Reboot the FortiDeceptor-100G with the console connected properly.
  2. When the following prompt appears, press Enter immediately:

Please wait for OS to boot, or press any key to display configuration menu..

  1. From the menu, press 'B'. Note: While the menu labels this as 'Boot with backup,' it actually functions as a toggle between the Default and Backup partitions.

  2. The device should boot into the Default partition and display the following lines:

Initializing system files ............................................ [ OK ]
