Technical Tip: Understanding Release Order for EMS Upgrade

Description This article describes the importance of checking the release order when performing EMS upgrades to prevent upgrade issues.

Solution

Before performing an EMS (Enterprise Management Server) upgrade, one important factor to check is the release date of the EMS versions involved.

 

FortiClient EMS cannot be upgraded to a version that was released before the currently installed version. Attempting this may result in an upgrade failure.

 

Example:
If the EMS is currently running v7.0.13, released on 2nd July 2024, it cannot be upgraded to v7.2.4 because that version was released earlier, which is on 4th March 2024. Although the version number is higher, the upgrade will not proceed because the release date is before the installed version.

How to check the EMS release date:

  1. Navigate to support.fortinet.com
  2. Go to Download -> Firmware Images.
  3. Select FortiClientEMS from the product list.
  4. Check the Release Date Column.
