Technical Tip: Import specific FortiClient VPN profile without losing other VPN profiles

Description

This article describes how to import a specific FortiClient VPN profile to FortiClient without affecting/losing other profiles.

Solution

As per the following screenshot, there is currently only one profile configured, named 'LDAPS-FGT':

Solution:

1. Create a backup file of the current FortiClient configuration: Backing up the full configuration file.
   
   

2. Similarly, create a backup file of the FortiClient from which the profile will be imported.

    

3. Open both files in a text editor, as shown below:

The left file contains the 'LDAPS-FGT' profile, and the right file contains 'Imported-Profile'.

4. Copy the configuration part from <connection> to </connection> (from the config file that is desired to be imported into the profile).

5. Locate </connection> and in the next line, paste the configuration below the existing one or locate <connections>. In the next line, paste the configuration on top of the existing one.

6. Save the configuration file and restore it in the FortiClient: Restoring the full configuration file.

The profile will import successfully:

Previous VPN configurations will not be overwritten.
