Technical Tip: How to change the IP address of a Windows Server with FortiClientEMS installed

Description

This article describes the required procedures in FortiClient EMS when the IP address of a Windows Server is changed.

Scope

FortiClient EMS v7.2.x.

Solution

When the IP address of a Windows Server with EMS installed is changed, it is first necessary to update the relevant IP address fields in the EMS system settings.

However, this alone is not sufficient for proper integration with FortiGate via the Fabric connector.

An 'Internal processing errors' will occur because EMS is unable to recognize the updated IP address.

To avoid this issue, follow the steps below:

  1. In the EMS GUI, navigate to System Settings -> EMS Settings. From the dropdown menus for ‘Listen on IP’ and ‘FortiClient download URL’, select the updated IP address.

Note:

A message will appear indicating that additional configuration is required after changing the IP address.

  1. Restart the Windows Server or restart the FortiClientEMS services. To restart FortiClientEMS, first stop the FCEMS_Monitor, then stop each service. After that, start the FCEMS_Monitor. For detailed instructions, refer to the following Knowledge Base article: Technical Tip: How to stop/start EMS services without restarting the Operating System.

  1. After the restart, verify the Connection status and ensure it shows 'Connected'.

Note:

It is highly risky to perform these actions without prior preparation in a production environment. It is recommended to conduct pre-validation to ensure that all functions operate correctly after changing the IP address. Take a snapshot in advance to ensure a reliable rollback if necessary.
