Solution
FortiAuthenticator comes with two free trial tokens. The error message 'You cannot receive more free trial FTM tokens because there are already some in the system' may crop up when trying to activate the trial license.
This error occurs if the trial license was previously activated, and one of the two trial tokens still remains in FortiAuthenticator:

Trial tokens can be identified by the FortiTokenMobile (FTM) license number: it will begin with FTMTRIALxxxxxxxx.
To make the second, deleted token available again, it is necessary to delete the first token as well. If that token is assigned to a user, it must also first be unassigned from the user.

After both trial tokens are deleted, they may be created again by clicking on 'Create New', then selecting 'FortiToken Mobile' and toggling the free trial token button. Note that FortiAuthenticator requires internet access for this.


After this, the trial tokens may be assigned to users again.
Additionally, note that if the FortiAuthenticator is a member in a load-balancing cluster (no matter which role it takes in the cluster), trial tokens are unavailable.
