Solution | The FortiAP-HD-431G belongs to the FortiAP-HD high-density series, which is a specialized FortiAP family designed for ultra-high-density wireless environments, such as stadiums, arenas, large venues, campuses, convention centers, and similar deployments.
Unlike standard FortiAP models, the FortiAP-HD series is not managed by the FortiGate wireless controller.
These models require a dedicated FortiAP-HD WLAN Controller for management, authorization, configuration, and operation.
Therefore, if a user attempts to connect a FortiAP-HD-431G or any HD FortiAP Seires to an existing FortiGate-managed wireless infrastructure, the FortiGate will not be able to authorize or control the FortiAP as it would with regular FortiAP models. This behavior is expected and is not caused by a FortiGate configuration issue, firmware mismatch, or FortiAP authorization problem.
Fortinet’s FortiAP-HD documentation and FAQ confirm that FortiAP-HD models are managed through the FortiAP-HD WLAN Controller, and that they cannot be managed by FortiGate.
For this reason, the FortiAP-HD-431G cannot be used as a standard FortiGate-managed FortiAP.
To deploy this model, the user must use the required FortiAP-HD WLAN Controller. If the customer needs to integrate the FortiAP into an existing FortiGate/FortiAP wireless deployment, a different FortiAP model compatible with FortiGate management should be selected instead.
The supported FortiGate-managed FortiAP models can be verified in the official FortiAP and FortiOS Compatibility Matrix.
