Technical Tip: Selecting the Number of RAID Groups for RAID-50 or RAID-60 (FortiAnalyzer)
Description
This article describes how to check the available RAID levels and select the number of RAID groups when configuring RAID 50 or RAID 60 on a FortiAnalyzer hardware appliance.
Â
Scope
FortiAnalyzer hardware appliances supporting RAID 50 or RAID 60.
Â
Solution
The number of RAID groups can be selected from the FortiAnalyzer CLI during disk formatting. The available options depend on the appliance model and disk configuration.
Step 1: Check the current RAID configuration.
Run the following command to check the current RAID level, status, and disk groups:
diagnose system raid status
Step 2: Check the available RAID levels.
Use the following command to display the RAID levels supported by the appliance:
execute format disk *
The asterisk (*) displays the available options without formatting the disks.
Step 3: Check the available RAID group options.
For RAID 50:
execute format disk 50 *
For RAID 60:
execute format disk 60 *
These commands display the available RAID group options. The number of RAID groups can only be specified for RAID 50 and RAID 60.
Step 4: Select the number of RAID groups.
The group count should be selected based on the available options and the number of physical disks.
For example, an appliance with 15 disks using two groups of seven disks would leave one disk unused. Selecting three groups of five disks would allow all 15 disks to be used, provided this configuration is supported by the appliance.
To configure RAID 50 with three groups:
execute format disk 50 3
The command above is an example. Always verify the supported RAID group options before formatting.
Note: Disk formatting requires the FortiAnalyzer to be in Standalone mode. The operation erases existing device settings, databases, and log data. The IP address and routing information are preserved.
Back up the required configuration and data before proceeding.
