Description
This article describes the cause and resolution for the error “Open boot device failed” observed during the FortiADC boot process.
Scope
FortiADC and Hardware Appliances.
Solution
Problem Explanation.
This error occurs when the FortiBootLoader is unable to read a valid system image from the internal storage device (SSD/eMMC), preventing the appliance from loading the operating system. This condition is typically associated with:
Corrupted or missing factory image on new hardware.
Damaged or unreadable boot partition.
Interrupted or incomplete storage initialization.
Follow the steps of Restoring firmware (“clean install”) via TFTP to restore the device.
Example of console error below:

Post-Recovery recommendation.
After firmware installation, upgrade the appliance to the latest stable patch within the target release branch to ensure:
Updated drivers.
Improved storage handling.
Stability and performance fixes.
Additional notes.
If multiple devices exhibit the same error, repeat the TFTP recovery process on each unit.
If TFTP recovery fails or the bootloader cannot write to storage, the appliance may require RMA.
Capturing full console logs before reinstallation is recommended for root cause analysis.
